Sign of protest over Guv's beach house
A relic of the Raj on Elliots Beach at Besant Nagar, lying in disuse for decades and now under ‘reconstruction' for the use of the Governor, has united the fishing community and the affluent local residents, who fear they may lose access to the beach.
On Monday, around 500 local residents, including MLA S Ve Shekhar, joined hands to sign a memorandum opposing the construction that allegedly flouts the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, as well as exposes the double-standards adopted by the powers-that-be.
The palatial bungalow, lying a few metres from the seashore, is being ‘reconstructed' rapidly even as the State Government continues to evict thousands of families from areas like Foreshore estate, Dooming Kuppam and Srinivasapuram stating that it was being done for the safety of those ‘vulnerable' families.
"Not less than 2,000 families have been evicted so far from near the beach front citing such reasons, a move that affects their livelihood," pointed out R Geeta of the Unorganised Workers' Federation.
Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG), an NGO, has filed applications under the RTI Act to the Governor's Secretariat, the Department of Environment, the CMDA and the PWD regarding the clearance given for this construction that falls under the CRZ I and II notified area.
